Les groupes de verbes en français

In French, there are three verb groups. These are:

  1. Verbs that end in -ER
  2. Verbs that end in -IR
  3. Verbs that end in -RE
The verbs are divided into groups because their conjugation depends in which group they belong. For example the first group conjugated in the present indicative goes like this:

> AIMER = j'aime, tu aimes, il aime, elle aime, nous aimons, vous aimez, ils aiment, elles aiment.

Practice makes perfect!
Start by identifying which group the verbs in the picture above belong to. Then practice conjugating the first group (-ER) by following the example given. Later we will practice the other groups. Bonne chance!

Conjugaison des verbes

Ouais! Il est très facile de conjuguer en français!

This is the trick I teach my students which works with Romance languages:

Root + Ending (according to time and person) = Conjugated Verb
  1. Take the infinitive form of the verb, example AIMER.
  2. Eliminate the ending -ER (which in this case is the infinitive ending). Example: AIMER - ER= AIM
  3. What you are left with is called the root of the verb (AIM).
  4. Add the root with the ending according to time and person. Example: AIM + ES* = AIMES
  5. Practice until perfect!

*(-ES = second person in present de l'indicatif)
*(Tu aimes)
